When my studio neighbors hear the long, low sound of a gong these days, they know it’s me celebrating a bit of good news (and being my weird self).
Gifted to me on my 40th birthday by my parents, this gong is an homage to one they had in the entryway of my parents’ small business while I was growing up.
My folks ran a small machine tool business for much of my childhood, selling large machines that crafted parts for everything from airplanes to dentistry equipment. My grandpa had also run a machine shop when my dad was younger, and – like most US machine shops in the 60’s – made a part for the Apollo 11 moonshot.
When an order would come through at their business, they would sound the gong in celebration.
Years later, I would start a business (or two). I linked the sound of a gong to my orders inbox so now, every time someone buys something, that long, low gong sound chimes out of my phone.
The sound is a moment of celebration. My kids know what it means, and we all cheer and do a little dance when it sounds. Obviously my goal is to be so bothered by constant gong’ing that I have to remove this notification from my phone. But, for now, it is a great reminder.
And now, the big and real gong in the studio is there for big celebrations.
6 years as a full time artist meant 6 long gongs. My cousin recently got a promotion - and a gong. If you pick up an original piece of art from the studio, you’ll get yourself a big gong!
For me, this is what it’s like to own a small business. Celebrating each order, every person who finds a connection to my work and helps keep this whole thing going.
