You can’t be unhappy around a pink donut. They’re universally beloved. They’re Homer Simpson and little kids. Fluorescent frosting with sprinkles and coffee. A fun sugar bomb. When I had Covid last year, I lost my sense of taste for 11 weeks. After the first 6, I began to wonder if it would ever come back. And all I could think about were pink donuts. Eating them, painting them, watching documentaries about donuts. The thought of never tasting one again had me obsessed. Wheat allergy be damned, my body was mourning the loss of pink donuts over all else. Thankfully, with some smell therapy and time my sense of taste did eventually and slowly return. And you bet I dove into the “research” on this one when it did, buying every pink donut I could find, making my own frosting to get just the right color and consistency. Taking hundreds of photos and sketches to bring the exact donut from my imagination to life.
I had fun with this one. It was a catharsis for one of those simple and weird brain worms that just won’t go away until I paint it. Up close, the texture is messy and bold. But I left it with a really clean white background as a statement piece of art. A simple POW of pink, perfect for a kitchen or dining room.
