I was inspired to create this piece after spending a day with local KC beekeepers, Messner Bee Farm. During that time I learned that the queen bee spends most of her life inside the hive. In the heart of darkness. But she gets one big hurrah when she leaves the live to fly around and get chased by all the boys, so she can then go back and populate the hive by laying eggs. As a mom of small kids, this story fascinated me. The bold and bright colors of this piece were inspired by the pink roses and greens and ultraviolet colors (because we don't see the same spectrum as bees) I imagined from the queen's day out.
Bees have always been fascinating to me, as pollinators and female-led tiny democracies. But also because the matriarch of my very large family was named Beatrice.
